Stupidity In Sweden

OK, I'm not sure which is the most stupid part of this story out of Sweden. There's a couple from southern Sweden that says they're going to divorce if authorities won't let their son take both of their last names.

And you thought we simplified divorce too much here in the U.S.

The other part of this that's ridiculous is that Sweden has a law that says the children of married couples can't take so-called "double-barreled" last names. Children born to unmarried parents are permitted to use both names.

This particular couple has one child who was born before they were married. So that child gets the double-barreled name, but the one who was born after they were married doesn't. Admittedly, that's ridiculous. But it's hardly a reason to get divorced.

I've always thought of Sweden has being such a progressive country, but Swedish law prohibits married couples from passing down the woman's maiden name. Apparently, it's an ancient law that was intended to protect the names of Swedish aristocracy. And now it's just plain outdated.

So Sweden needs to get itself into the 21st Century, but this couple needs to just calm down. I'd like to think they're not serious about getting divorced just to make their point. But the fact that they'd go public with something like this is a little disturbing. Nobody should take divorce that lightly.
