In the interview, Bynum speaks candidly about her relationship with Weeks. She mentions prior instances of abuse separate from the August 21 alleged assault. On that night Bynum accuses her husband of beating, choking, and stomping her to the ground in a parking lot. Weeks was charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threatening and simple battery, and the entire episode led to their divorce.
I'm fairly certain Weeks never advocated wifebeating to his parishioners, so it must be a case of "do as I say, not as I do." Pardon the sarcasm, but what a great example he sets.
Weeks' attorney thinks the Essence interview reveals a "calculated, aggressive media attack" on his client. From the beginning, Thomas Weeks has denied the assault ever happened.
The Bynum interview will be in this month's Essence, and she'll have a cover story in January, discussing plans for a domestic violence ministry.
Here's hoping she can prove the abuse actually happened and it doesn't get dismissed with her being accused of trying to ruin her estranged husband. The last thing victims of abuse need is another person attempting to profit off their very real pain. Since I am leaning toward believing her, I think it's wonderful that she's trying to turn a bad situation into something positive that could benefit so many women and men caught in violent relationships.
