Springsteen: Home Wrecker?

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Fri, 04/10/2009 - 8:40am

We won't try to make a quippy play on words to link Bruce Springsteen's recent behavior to lyrics of one of his myriad songs. (Check out any of our highlighted links for an abundance of "Dancing in the Dark" references.) Here are the facts, plain and simple: A New Jersey man identified Springsteen in divorce documents, citing the musician committed adultery with his wife "too many times to mention," according to NJ.com.

Tabloid reports say Springsteen and the woman met at a local gym last year, and things took off from there.

Springsteen hasn't responded. He and wife Patti Scialfa, who performs in her husband's band, are currently on tour. Awkward!

Egyptian Communities Can Force Couples to Divorce

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Mon, 03/16/2009 - 11:20am

We've all had friends that we thought, "Boy, she made a mistake by marrying that guy." Now you can do something about it: Force a divorce! Everyone in favor of a divorce say "aye"…

Ok, not really, but close. According to global news site UPI.com, a Muslim cleric has issued a fatwa (a legally binding ruling from a religious leader) that allows community members to obtain on divorce on a couple's behalf.

If neighbors and/or family members believe a couple's differences to be beyond repair, they can file for the couple. If the community members can present solid evidence that husband and wife cannot live amicably, the court will divorce them.

Either You Have It or You Don't: the Key to a Successful Marriage

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Fri, 03/06/2009 - 1:17pm

According to British researchers, there is a recipe for a long-lasting, successful relationship — specifically:

"four kisses a day, sharing two hobbies, having three cuddles every 24 hours, saying at least one ‘I love you’ a day and enjoying two romantic meals a month could also help ensure a lasting liaison."

Make room on that do-to list! The new British research backs up the tenets of the Mars/Venus relationship philosophy theorized by John Gray. (In fact, we found this research study information on MarsVenusLiving.com.)

The research was actually a study conducted by a British wedding planning site. Okay, it's no Oxford, so we can't vouch for its validity — but it seems any relationship with "cuddles" is bound for success, no?

Dr. Diana Kirschner, FWW contributor and relationships expert, is hitting the small screen this weekend! You may remeber she offered dating advice in our recent, "Getting Back in the Dating Game," as well as strategies to fend off nosy friends and family at the holidays in "How To Navigate Nosy Divorce Questions on Thanksgiving" (but wonderfully helpful anytime of year).

Her program, Finding Your Own True Love, plans to cover breaking deadly dating patterns that ruin any chance of lasting love; tools to overcome shyness and enhance self-esteem; the Dating Program of Three; and finding, attracting, and dating terrific men. (Sounds pretty good...)

Man Tricks Wife Into Divorce

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Wed, 02/25/2009 - 10:50pm

Just last week, we scolded the actions of a Korean woman who went behind her husband’s back to obtain a divorce. This week, a British man has quite possibly sunk lower.

As reported in news site GetSurrey.com, Graeme Shore allegedly ended his decade-long marriage to Nongyao Yaiprab by pure trickery. Shore sent Yaiprab on a vacation, telling her she looked tired, worn out. Upon her return, she could not contact her husband. Her in-laws told her she could see him again if she signed a document — an English-language document. A Thai native and unable to read or speak English, Yaiprab could not determine that the document she signed were divorce papers. (Tricky in-laws!) Yaiprab signed, and the divorce was finalized.

Man Divorces Wife Over Take-Out Food

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Tue, 02/24/2009 - 3:04pm

We'll give one guess from which country this divorce story originated. Yes, India!

Tired of take-out? It’s time to split! As reported by The Croatian Times, an Indian husband has taken his wife to divorce court because she has served him nothing but take-out since they married in December 2007.

From the piece:

"I even taught her to cook as well but it was of no help. I am just tired of eating take-away food from restaurants and stalls. I need a divorce," he told the court.

We’ve heard all sorts of oddball reasons for divorce in India: acne, smoking, a disagreement about room temperature — but too much take-out? Doesn’t sound like such an issue. (If only we could opt for to-go every night. Sounds like a dream!)

Heterosexual Couples Opt for Same-Sex Civil Union Proceedings

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Thu, 02/19/2009 - 11:31am

What if marriage looked something like this: a simple, 15-minute ceremony; options for joint benefits and tax filing; dissolution by means of a formal, signed letter with no claim to the other's money.

If this sounds like a civil union with benefits, that's because it is. And it appeals to hundreds of thousands of heterosexual couples, who have opted for the Civil Solidarity Pact (PACS), which France initially designed for same-sex couples wishing to tie the knot.

In fact 90% of those who choose a PACS are heterosexual — around 135,000 of the 150,000 couples a year, reports The Telegraph.

With a current marrying generation detached from religious marriage ceremonies and the increasing cost of divorce proceedings, the article states, the solidarity pact is a practical alternative.
