Dreams Do Come True

Dreams Do Come True

Have you heard of Susan Boyle? Forty-seven year old, plump, heavy eye-browed Susan Boyle? If you haven’t, you need to.  You need to hear her sing. She is the woman who has managed to blow away Simon Cowell and just about every contestant on American Idol with her performance of “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables on the British talent show, Britain’s Got Talent (American Idol’s parent).

And she’s never been married or kissed and lives with her cat. She has been singing in her church choir, however, since she was 12 years old. And this dear, sweet sister had a dream. She wanted to be a famous singer, like Elaine Page, she said.  Page is best known for her performance in the theater musical Cats as the outcast, Grizabella, who sang the very famous song, “Memory.”

When Susan walked out on the stage, she seemed real enough, perhaps too real for Simon and the other two judges and the entire audience. They were against her. They had a very powerful wake-up call. This woman blew everyone away with her voice and her talent and her completely surprising emotion. She nailed it!

And now, she has a chance to realize her dream; though her first dream was to sing in front of a very large audience. She’s well on her way, and it made me feel so happy, so completely full of joy and goodness and all that is light and positive and beautiful about life.

We stop too soon in our lives. When I was in my late twenties I had a term for people who had stopped living but were continuing to walk and talk and work and breathe – I called them the Walking Dead. And in my thirties I nearly joined their ranks. But, through what I believe to be a miracle, I was saved. And it was a long road back to the land of the living, but I made it.

Even after all the pain in my marriage, which came even later, I still managed to come through it all with a smile and, more importantly, a dream. Don’t give up on your dreams. They are more real than so many of the people walking this earth.

Watch this woman who is living her dream.

And don’t forget your own.

re: I Bought Ms. Boyle's CD today at Sam's

Amazing. When I wrote this post, I was in a completely different place. Today, looking back, I am still amazed about the impact that Susan Boyle had on me then, and now. If you have not purchased the CD "I Had A Dream" - you are missing out on something completely amazing. When I listened to the CD, and I listened to it from beginning to end in one sitting, I was amazed at the theme throughout - you feel Ms. Boyle's pain and suffering. You feel her joy and hope. You are literally transported into an emotional universe that you very well may have forgotten. Please buy this woman's CD. You will never feel the things you will only feel when you listen. Oh, and one more thing - her voice is fantastic. Crisp. Clean. Clear and poignant. Congratulations to you, Ms. Boyle. Tell Pebbles hello for me.

Susan Boyle's homeland

Susan Boyle was not on American Idol. She is a Brit - who appeared on "Britain's Got Talent" of which Simon Cowell is also a judge. She shows that even in a society where "class" is still a stand-out issue and looks are secondary, the beauty of her voice far exceeds what we see. No doubt the world embraces her because she is anathema to what we "think" should be star-quality. True talent isn't packaged in shiny foil and holographic ribbon.

Thank you, Julia!

The Susan Boyle is a very inspirational story for us all. Unmarried, never been loved by a man, perhaps, but happy nonetheless, Ms. Boyle represents something special for us all. - ~Wanda

Amen!

Wanda, I wholeheartedly agree! I, too became the walking dead for a while, but only after a very painful and unexpecteded divorce two years ago. I had my own miracle recently feeling that I have also been saved and I look forward to REALLY being alive in life like never before. Luckily, my ex decided to do what he did while we were still young in age, so I have been given a beautiful gift of deep healing I did not know was possible and that I will carrying with me for the rest of my life! Also, you actually pointed out two beautiful things. First, that dreams are still possible and worth holding on to no matter what. And, two, that you can make a beautiful life for yourself whether or not you are married! Blessings to you, Julia
